Hyde Park was first developed by Morton Martin Shipe, in 1891. In the early days, it featured streetcars, an artificial lake, and a number of stately Victorian homes, designed to appeal to Austin’s growing upper-middle class. For a time, it was also home to the State Fair of Texas.
