Today Hyde Park is an attractive neighborhood, featuring large parks, many historic buildings, and quiet, leafy streets. Many of the suburb’s oldest buildings are centered in two historic districts – the Hyde Park Historic District and the Shadow Lawn Historic District.

Hyde Park was first developed by Morton Martin Shipe, in 1891. In the early days, it featured streetcars, an artificial lake, and a number of stately Victorian homes, designed to appeal to Austin’s growing upper-middle class. For a time, it was also home to the State Fair of Texas.
